Mapim to deploy humanitarian mission to Nepal on Sept 5

Mapim, a Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations, will send a humanitarian mission to Nepal on September 5 to aid those impacted by devastating flash floods. Mapim president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid stated that the mission will involve four volunteers to evaluate needs in the affected regions and coordinate necessary aid.

To maximize the impact of assistance, Mapim is also seeking participation from other local NGOs, including collaboration with MyCare and two other local NGOs in Nepal. On August 26, an avalanche-triggered flash flood in Nepal resulted in at least 469 deaths and over 1,400 people missing, including nearly 540 foreigners. The incident caused a rapid flow of rocks, ice, mud, and debris through Himalayan mountain rivers, destroying villages and infrastructure along a popular trekking route connecting Kathmandu to Lhasa in Tibet.

The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 57 Malaysians remain unaccounted for following the disaster. Mohd Azmi emphasized that medical supplies and basic food packs are the top priorities for the mission. He expressed hope that the mission would demonstrate Malaysia's unity and willingness to support the affected victims.
