Kirk Cousins looks set to lead the Raiders even as Klint Kubiak keeps QB decision quiet

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak has yet to announce a starting quarterback for the upcoming season, with just two weeks left before the regular season begins. However, there is a strong indication that Kirk Cousins will be the one behind the helm when the Raiders step onto the field for their September 13 matchup against the Miami Dolphins.

Cousins was the primary playcaller in training camp and shone in the two preseason games he played as the starter. He was responsible for carrying the experience of what would be his 15th season in the NFL, as the Raiders will be introducing rookie and first overall draft pick Fernando Mendoza. With three preseason drives led by Cousins, all of which resulted in points - a touchdown and two field goals, Kubiak is confident in his quarterback's performance.

Currently, the team is at a crossroads, as they have to decide whether to keep three quarterbacks on the roster when they finalize the 53-man lineup. Aidan O’Connell, who has been with the Raiders for four seasons, could be the first in line should Cousins encounter any obstacles. This decision could give Mendoza more time to develop, should the coaches choose to go that route.

Mendoza concluded his preseason by contributing to one of five drives that ended in a field goal against the San Francisco 49ers. He completed 7 of 14 passes for 57 yards while facing a tough pass rush, resulting in two sacks and one interception. Despite the interception being a high throw that bounced off Jalen Nailor's hands, Kubiak praised Mendoza's execution, stating, "I thought it was an excellent throw."

The upcoming season will likely see both Cousins and Mendoza battling for the starting position. Kubiak has expressed confidence in both players, stating that they are both excited and ready to take on the challenge. As the team prepares for the first game against the Dolphins, the running game will rely on both Ashton Jeanty and rookie Mike Washington Jr., who both showed promise during the preseason.
