King Harald dies at 89 after long reign

Norway's King Harald V passed away on Friday at the age of 89, after a 35-year reign marked by his role as a symbol of national unity. He had been hospitalized since August 17 due to complications from haemolytic anaemia, a condition where red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced. His health deteriorated rapidly, prompting the cancellation of engagements by Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon, and other royal family members.

Harald's prolonged seniority in office remained unwavering despite his declining health, as he consistently ruled out abdication, citing his constitutional oath to serve for life. Born on February 21, 1937, in Skaugum, Asker, he was the only son of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha, securing the succession at a time when Norway's constitution allowed only male heirs to inherit the throne.

The Second World War significantly shaped his early life, as the royal family and government fled Oslo during the German invasion in 1940. Harald ascended the throne upon his grandfather's death in 1957, following his father's accession as King Olav V. He married commoner Sonja Haraldsen in 1968, overcoming initial hurdles in a traditionally restrictive royal establishment.

The couple had two children, Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon. Harald assumed the role of king on January 17, 1991, after his father's death. Throughout his reign, Norway thrived economically, relying on petroleum revenues, a robust welfare system, and the world's largest sovereign wealth fund. Still, Harald remained above partisan politics, upholding his role as the constitutional and ceremonial head of state.
