King Harald dies at 89 after long reign

Norway's King Harald V passed away on August 28, 2023, at the age of 89, after a 35-year reign that made him one of the country's most recognized symbols of national unity. He died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet at 6:35 am. King Harald had been hospitalized since August 17 due to haemolytic anaemia, a condition causing red blood cells to be destroyed faster than they can be produced, and a subsequent bloodstream infection.

His health deteriorated rapidly in his final days, prompting the royal family to cancel engagements and gather at the hospital. Hailed as a unifying figure during his reign, Harald faced several health issues, including a 2024 surgery and pacemaker implantation after illness during a private trip to Malaysia. Despite reduced public duties, he consistently ruled out abdicating, emphasizing his lifelong commitment to the role as per his constitutional oath.

Born in 1937, Harald was Norway's first prince since 1940 and ascended to the throne upon his grandfather's death in 1957. His marriage to commoner Queen Sonja in 1968 was initially contentious but led to the birth of their children, Princess Märtha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon. Harald's 35-year reign coincided with Norway's transformation into one of Europe's wealthiest nations, driven by oil revenues and a robust welfare system.

His global image was shaped by his emphasis on tolerance and social inclusion, particularly after tragic national events like the 2011 attacks in Oslo and Utøya. Upon his death, the crown passed to his son, Crown Prince Haakon, who had already taken on regal duties during his father's illness.
