Acting managing director Kipkemoi Kibias reported an immediate improvement in voltage levels at the Nanyuki substation following the energization of the project. Kibias explained that the project involves a new 132kV substation at Isiolo, expansion of the existing Nanyuki substation, and the redesign of a 4.2km section as an underground cable due to security restrictions around Laikipia Air Base.
The additional transmission capacity will support growing demand from agriculture, commercial, and industrial sectors, reduce supply interruptions, and create additional grid capacity for renewable energy projects. The project is particularly significant as the region lies along the planned Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor.
KETRACO is now preparing to energize the 132kV Nanyuki-Rumuruti transmission line and is also working on a transmission link connecting Loiyangalani, Marsabit, and Isiolo, further strengthening the electricity network in northern Kenya.
