KATH records reduced maternal deaths for the first time in 10 years

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has reported a significant reduction in maternal mortality for the first time in ten years, according to CEO Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo. In the first six months of 2026, maternal deaths decreased from 78 in mid-year 2025 to 55 in the corresponding period. Dr. Baidoo credits the decline to the hospital's recent establishment of a maternal Intensive Care Unit, supported by an aesthetic and intensive care team, which can accommodate eight beds, with four currently in operation.

Additionally, the hospital has completed the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Centre, marking it as the first public health facility in the country to have a state-of-the-art fertility center. KATH has also strengthened its outreach programs with regional health authorities to improve maternal care in peripheral health facilities.

Other key performance indicators improved, including a 3.61% increase in Specialist Out-Patient Department attendance and a 116.67% achievement rate in Emergency attendance. While the hospital has shown progress, areas like deliveries, surgeries, and certain admission figures still need improvement.
