Justin Muturi warns Wetang’ula over 2027 Election law delay

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has cautioned politicians against undermining the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) by attempting to dictate how the electoral body procures technology and other election materials. Speaking in Kakamega County, Wetang'ula responded to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's allegations that IEBC had rigged a tender to favor South Korean technology firm Miru Systems Co. Ltd. Gachagua claimed the outcome of the procurement was predetermined, but IEBC rejected these allegations, stating their process is open and transparent.

IEBC chairman Erastus Ethekon emphasized the commission's independence and urged politicians to respect the judicial process. Wetang'ula likened the situation to a football match, warning politicians against selecting referees, determining rules, or influencing the contest. He urged IEBC officials to adhere to the law and Constitution, and not be intimidated by political actors.

The IEBC tender, advertised in August, covers the supply, installation, and maintenance of the Integrated Elections Management System (IEMS) and related hardware and accessories. The procurement process has attracted a challenge before the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board. Wetang'ula also called for unity in Western Kenya, urging supporters of the late ODM leader Raila Odinga to remain within the broad-based government led by President William Ruto.
