Judge temporarily blocks Trump administration's attempt to restrict mail-in voting

U.S. District Court Judge Indira Talwani temporarily halted the Trump administration's plan to restrict mail-in voting through key provisions of a new USPS rule. The judge issued an order preventing the Postal Service from increasing its oversight of mail-in voting and increasing verification requirements for mail-in ballots. This decision comes after a 6-3 Supreme Court ruling on Monday stated that states lacked standing to challenge Trump's order at the time.

The judge's latest order blocks the rule for at least 14 days, potentially sending the legal battle back to the Supreme Court. The new USPS rule requires states to collect and report basic voter information on every mail-in ballot, which they would then input into a federal ballot mail portal. If states do not comply, the USPS will refuse to deliver ballots to them.

New York Attorney General Letitia James called the rule an attempt to interfere in elections it has no power to control and vowed to continue fighting to ensure the rule does not disrupt midterm elections.
