Gen Z‑led uprisings across Asia: Strengths and limitations of youth protest

Gen Z-led protest movements across Asia have brought to light deep-rooted anger over issues such as corruption, unemployment, and elite impunity. However, only Nepal has succeeded in transforming this fury into a transfer of governing power and lasting institutional change. Youth influencers in Nepal capitalized on viral hashtags to turn scattered frustrations into a coordinated mass protest, showcasing the power of digital networks in galvanizing collective action.

Yet, the outcomes of these protests have varied significantly across the region. While Nepal experienced a complete political upheaval with a new political class replacing the old in a single election, other nations like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka saw similar transitions but within a more conventional framework. India also witnessed a youth-led movement that, although powerful, managed to influence the national debate without overhauling the existing political order.

This stark contrast makes Nepal's political evolution truly unique, as no other youth movement has managed to achieve such a transformative result. Nepal's government, under Prime Minister Balendra Shah, has taken decisive actions, including appointing a leaner cabinet and introducing a comprehensive 100-point reform agenda focused on political integrity and administrative efficiency.

The success of these reforms in meeting the expectations of the young electorate remains to be seen, as the country navigates the challenges of institutional change and political transformation.
