Fresh flood warnings for disaster-hit Nepal and Tibet, 1,400 still missing

Fresh flood warnings have been issued for Nepal and Tibet following a devastating glacial collapse that triggered a massive flow of icy debris, leaving over 1,400 people missing. The disaster, which caused a "tsunami-like" wall of freezing water and mud, swept away entire villages along the remote Himalayan border. Emergency teams have recovered 392 bodies, and Nepali soldiers are using sniffer dogs to search for additional victims buried under the debris.

Many of the missing are foreign tourists and Hindu pilgrims en route to Mount Kailash, a sacred site in Tibet. The US Geological Survey attributes the disaster to climate change-induced glacier melting, which increases the risk of glacial lake floods and collapses. Nepali authorities warn of a high risk of the debris blocking the valley breaching, potentially sending floodwaters downstream.

Kathmandu has issued a special notice to exercise extreme caution. Survivors have expressed their desperation, with some pleading for the return of their missing loved ones. The Chinese government has evacuated 555 stranded tourists and 499 local residents from Tibet, while the Dalai Lama has pledged prayers for the victims.
