Four killed as hoodlums clash in Lagos community

Four men were killed on Thursday following a dispute that erupted in the Power Line Bus Stop area of Ikola, Lagos State. According to a local resident, the altercation began with a confrontation between a northerner and an individual believed to be a leader of a cult group. The disagreement quickly escalated into violence, resulting in a riot that required the intervention of Meiran Division police reinforcements.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that four individuals perished in the clash, with rumors suggesting an additional three fatalities. LASEMA's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, informed that emergency services were dispatched to the scene at 1:52 pm after receiving a distress call about a fire outbreak. The agency's initial assessment revealed that the incident stemmed from the initial disagreement, leading to multiple injuries and property destruction.

In response to the violence, a joint security operation comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps was deployed to quell the unrest and protect lives and property. The Agbado Oke-Odo Ambulance Service, Nigerian Red Cross Society, and other healthcare providers provided medical assistance to the injured victims.

Subsequent efforts by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully extinguished the fire and prevented its further spread.

The situation has since been stabilized in Ikola and neighboring communities, with security forces maintaining a presence to deter any further breaches of public order. Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents to remain peaceful, refrain from retaliation, and avoid disseminating unverified information that could exacerbate tensions. A thorough investigation was initiated to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the incident, with accountability assured for any culpable parties.
