FG to deploy 21 dams for power generation

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to convert 21 abandoned dams along the Sokoto-Badagry Road into hydroelectric power stations. This initiative was revealed during the launch of the Renewable Energy Asset Management Company in Abuja by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe. Tegbe stated that the discovery of these dams during the construction of the road prompted questions about why such infrastructure had remained unused for many years.

He emphasized that the government aims to optimize public assets, ensuring that existing infrastructure is utilized for productive purposes.

The government's policy on small-scale hydro projects is part of broader efforts to assess and connect stranded power assets to areas where they are needed. This strategy includes targeting corridors with power shortages, such as Lagos, Kano, and Borno. Tegbe explained that technical audits are being conducted to evaluate the condition of the infrastructure along these corridors, with plans to replace faulty equipment.

The government will not sell these assets but will strive to put them to productive use, leveraging them to attract funding.

Tegbe highlighted the government's commitment to improving Nigeria's energy sector, aiming to transition from a system focused solely on acquiring and commissioning infrastructure to one that actively manages public assets. He noted that Nigeria has a wealth of power assets and energy resources but has struggled to provide reliable electricity.

The government's vision is to use electricity to drive economic growth, industrial development, and the adoption of digital infrastructure, ultimately aiming to end grid collapse and provide a stable power supply to Nigerians.
