FG plans CCTV on Niger Bridge to curb vandalism

The Federal Government has mandated the swift installation of CCTV cameras and solar-powered streetlights on the First Niger Bridge to combat vandalism and theft of vital components. During a site visit on Thursday, Minister of Works Dave Umahi expressed alarm over vandalism targeting bolts, expansion joints, and iron bars that support the bridge structure, deeming it a safety hazard.

Umahi noted that the CCTV system would provide real-time footage to authorities, aiding in the identification and apprehension of suspects. He commended the public for alerting authorities to the issue. Umahi also directed the Anambra State Controller of Works, Timothy Emenike, to urgently replace the stolen bolts and commence welding repairs.

He announced that the bridge, currently carrying a significant dead load due to its asphalt layer, would be closed at night for maintenance. Umahi further visited the Second Niger Bridge, where he inspected erosion-prone areas and ordered the arrest of anyone caught sand mining. He warned vandals and illegal sand miners, stating that the government would not invest in infrastructure to see it destroyed.

The bridge will be equipped with cameras to deter future vandalism, with the footage accessible via phone and linked to the police for swift action.
