FG plans CCTV on Niger Bridge to curb vandalism

The Federal Government has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras and solar-powered streetlights on the First Niger Bridge to prevent vandalism and theft of vital components, according to the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. Umahi expressed concern over vandalism of bolts, expansion joints, and iron bars that hold the bridge together, describing the situation as dangerous.

The CCTV system will transmit live footage to relevant officials and the police, enabling security agencies to identify and apprehend suspects. Umahi noted that members of the public alerted the government about the vandalism, which includes stolen bolts and disconnected overhead steel bars. The minister directed the Controller of Works in Anambra State, Timothy Emenike, to replace the affected bolts immediately.

Umahi also ordered the arrest of anyone found excavating sand around the Second Niger Bridge due to erosion concerns and urged the Federal Government to take action against vandals and illegal sand miners.
