Examining the Big Ten Conference Championship Odds

Beginning the season, Penn State held the sixth spot on FanDuel's list of Big Ten championship contenders. Matt Campbell, in his inaugural season with the team, undoubtedly faces a formidable challenge. Nevertheless, unforeseen events can occur, particularly during the course of a college football season. Below, we examine the Big Ten's projected championship winners before the postseason begins.

Ohio State, sporting a +185 odds, is the clear favorite. Despite not playing in the final two games of the 2025 season, the Buckeyes boast an offensive prowess that is arguably the best in the nation. Returning quarterback Julian Sayin boasts exceptional accuracy, the offensive line is largely intact, and running back Bo Jackson is emerging as a rising star.

Wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is also a standout, with other talented receivers surrounding him. Although the defense suffered significant losses from last season, they have consistently performed well with their roster of five-star players. It is no wonder why they top the polls once again this season.

Next in line are the Ducks at +270 odds. Oregon possesses one of the most complete rosters in the country, returning key players like Dante Moore, a potent backfield, and standout receivers Evan Stewart and Dakorian Moore. The defensive line is formidable, and the team lacks weaknesses throughout its defense. Although Oregon ended its last two seasons with dominant losses to eventual national champions, their overall roster strength gives them a strong chance to potentially buck that trend and win the first national title in program history.

Curt Cignetti's presence on the sideline ensures the Hoosiers' inclusion in the discussion. Their offensive and defensive development under his guidance have transformed the Indiana program from the bottom of the Big Ten to a top-tier contender. Quarterback Josh Hoover from TCU is expected to step in and potentially become a Heisman contender this season. The Hoosiers have proven themselves capable of achieving significant success under Cignetti's guidance.

The Dark Horse of the Big Ten, Michigan, stands at +1600 odds. It would be surprising for any team except the top three to claim the Big Ten championship this season. However, the Wolverines could make an unexpected run with the emergence of Bryce Underwood. As the nation's top overall recruit in 2025, Underwood had a strong freshman year but has significant room for growth.

If he continues to develop, he could become one of the most dangerous players in the nation. Michigan appears to be solid on both lines of scrimmage, and head coach Kyle Whittingham has demonstrated his ability to maximize player potential. The main question is whether Underwood is ready to take his place in the spotlight.

At the bottom of the list, Maryland, Purdue, Northwestern, Michigan State, and Rutgers are given +40,000 odds. FanDuel does not believe any of these five teams will make an impact in the Big Ten race. While I agree with this assessment, I would not rate Northwestern quite as low and would not be surprised to see them pull off upsets or challenges posed by the main contenders. It is not far-fetched to imagine one of these programs making a leap to the top of the conference.
