Embattled travel giant repaying tens of millions of dollars to overcharged clients

Corporate Travel Management, an Australian travel giant, is refunding tens of millions of dollars to clients who were overcharged for air tickets and rebates from suppliers. The company has agreed to refund almost 80% of the $246 million in overcharges, with the remaining amount pending finalization. This situation follows a recent ABC report revealing a massive overcharging scandal involving refugee accommodation in the UK.

Corporate Travel's new CEO, Ana Pedersen, acknowledged the challenging period for investors, clients, partners, and employees, expressing gratitude for their support. The company, which serves clients ranging from councils to governments, will refund the overcharges due to contractual obligations or contractual ambiguity. Some overcharges resulted from management's belief that billing practices aligned with long-standing policies, while others were due to the company failing to pass on rebates to clients.

The Australian Financial Review previously reported that the New Zealand government is scrutinizing potential reimbursements to the country. Despite facing multiple governance concerns and posting a $347 million loss for 2025, Corporate Travel has secured a $175 million finance line from private equity firm Pacific Equity Partners.

The company's shares, once valued at nearly $2 billion, remain frozen as it continues to address its financial and ethical challenges.
