‘Don’t need help’: Nepal declines foreign rescue teams as flood death toll nears 500

Nepal has turned down offers from several countries to send search and rescue teams following devastating flash floods that have claimed at least 469 lives and left hundreds missing. The decision was made as rescue operations continue in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems near the Nepal-China border. The foreign ministry has received numerous requests from countries and international organizations, but officials stated that Nepali security agencies were capable of leading the operation.

The government explained that the experience following the 2015 earthquake, where foreign rescue teams caused coordination and management issues, influenced their decision. Nepal now seeks financial assistance to be channeled through a single mechanism, with further international support expected during rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Among those missing are foreign nationals, including 178 Indians, 65 Americans, 51 Malaysians, 53 Ukrainians, 33 Britons, 35 Australians, and 25 Canadians. The United States has pledged $500,000, and the World Health Organization has sent emergency medical supplies. Nepal has established an Emergency Control Room to coordinate efforts and consular assistance.
