Dolly Parton’s legacy lives on through book deliveries to kids

For three-year-old Simon Dockery, the excitement of checking the mailbox each month for a new book is a cherished tradition. Since infancy, books from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library have been delivered to his family’s home in Georgia, continuing now to his younger brother Samuel. This monthly gift has fostered a love for reading within the family, transforming it into a shared experience.

Dolly Parton, the renowned country music icon and philanthropist, established the Imagination Library in 1995, driven by her father’s own literacy challenges. Initially serving children in Tennessee, the program has expanded globally, reaching five countries and distributing over 300 million free books to children aged birth to five.

Parton’s initiative began as a local endeavor but soon became an international literacy movement, sending personalized books tailored to each child’s age directly to their homes. The program’s impact is evident in areas like Washington, D.C., where over 100,000 children have benefited from the partnership between the Imagination Library and the DC Public Library.

Shami Chimonyo, a parent in the nation’s capital, enrolled her infant daughter shortly after birth, inspired by the desire to combat declining literacy rates. She praises the high-quality, well-written books, noting their visual appeal to young learners. “It’s a treat we look forward to receiving,” Chimonyo remarked, highlighting the program’s role in cultivating a love for literature.
