Death toll from devastating Nepal-Tibet floods passes 500

In the wake of devastating floods at the Nepal-Tibet border, more than 500 lives have been tragically lost, with the death toll now confirmed at 547, according to the Nepal Police. The human toll extends further, with over 1,473 people injured, and more than 4,000 police personnel actively engaged in the rescue efforts. The Red Cross, meanwhile, estimates that over 90,000 individuals are directly affected, requiring urgent humanitarian assistance.

This figure is believed to be as high as 93,000, as highlighted by David Fisher, the head of delegation for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Nepal.

Authorities are closely monitoring two lakes upstream of the disaster zone, with one having begun to overflow on Friday, prompting a desperate search for survivors. A wall of ice, mud, and rock broke away from a mountain river, triggering a catastrophic flash flood. Rescue teams are utilizing helicopters to scour the affected areas and drop emergency supplies to those stranded due to the destruction of a road connecting Kathmandu with Lhasa in Tibet.

The UAE has pledged a significant $10 million humanitarian aid package to bolster the relief efforts, with Dr Tareq Al Amiri, chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, affirming the country's commitment to supporting disaster responses worldwide.

The impact of the flood has been devastating, as recounted by Girilal Budhathoki, a survivor at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, whose wife and child were taken by the flood, leaving him among the injured. His brother, Newall, expressed the heart-wrenching reality of losing most of their family in the disaster, stating, "There was no chance to save anyone, nobody knew it was coming."
