Death toll from devastating Nepal-Tibet floods passes 500

The death toll from devastating floods that struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet has surpassed 500, according to the latest figures released by Nepal Police on Friday afternoon. As of the update, 547 individuals have been confirmed dead, with an additional 1,473 victims suffering injuries. Over 4,000 police officers are actively engaged in the disaster response efforts, while more than 1,000 people remain missing across the Himalayan nation and neighboring China.

The Red Cross estimates that approximately 90,000 individuals have been directly impacted by the landslides, requiring urgent humanitarian assistance. David Fisher, head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies delegation in Nepal, expressed concern that at least 93,000 people are in dire need of support.

In response to the unfolding crisis, authorities are monitoring two lakes upstream of the affected area, with one already starting to overflow, according to an official from the country's Disaster Management Authority. Rescue teams are tirelessly searching for survivors amidst the aftermath of a massive wall of ice, mud, and rock that collapsed into a mountain river, triggering a catastrophic flash flood.

In an effort to reach those stranded, authorities are utilizing helicopters to search for survivors and deliver emergency supplies to thousands of people trapped in various towns and valleys. The floods have torn through a critical road connecting Kathmandu with Lhasa in Tibet, carrying trekkers and pilgrims. The UAE has pledged a $10 million humanitarian aid package to bolster relief efforts, with Dr. Tareq Al Amiri, chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, confirming that the Emirates will maintain a leading role in supporting disaster response globally.

The UAE team is collaborating with local authorities and international organizations to ensure effective support reaches those affected.
