Deadly Russian strikes hit civilian targets in Ukraine

Ukrainian engineers have developed a turret system that can be mounted on low-cost unmanned ground robots, utilizing the ubiquitous Kalashnikov rifle. The innovative turret, created by a company in the Brave1 cluster, is designed to be fitted onto these ground robots, providing them with increased firepower. Ukrainian military units have been utilizing these ground robots extensively, with 16,676 logistics, strike, and evacuation missions completed in June alone, representing a 122 percent increase since January.

The Ukrainian military has ordered over 22,000 such robots for 2026, nearly double the number ordered in 2025.

The developers of the turret completed the project in under six months, receiving financial support from the Brave1 cluster in the form of a technical assignment and grant. The turret features a twin turret mounting two Kalashnikov rifles at its core, housed within a four-wheel chassis equipped with airless tires and an armored body. The innovative turret design can be mounted on various types of ground robots, including wheeled and tracked models, providing flexibility and adaptability in combat situations.

The choice of the Kalashnikov rifle for the turret is strategic, as it is the most widely used small arm in Ukrainian military forces. This decision allows for a cost-effective and scalable solution for arming ground robots, enabling Ukraine to quickly scale up its strike capabilities against Russian forces. The turret's versatility in being mounted on different types of ground robots is a key feature, enabling the Ukrainian military to repurpose existing robots with minimal additional investment.

The Security Service Special Operations Center has already tested the turret in combat, successfully destroying Russian ambushes set with concealed waiting-mode drones. This successful deployment demonstrates the effectiveness of the turret system in providing additional firepower to Ukrainian ground robots in challenging combat environments.

The rapid development and deployment of this turret system highlight Ukraine's commitment to enhancing its ground robotics capabilities and ensuring a robust defense against Russian aggression.
