Canada Map Shows Every Geographic Landmark Named 'Trump'

A recent map released by Canadian authorities reveals numerous geographic landmarks bearing President Donald Trump's name, sparking debate across the nation. This follows President Trump's executive order directing federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as "Lake America" amid ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada. Ottawa officials are considering renaming Trump Avenue, a residential street in the city, with suggestions including "Taco Avenue" amidst the controversy.

Canada's geographic names are approved by provincial and territorial authorities and the Geographical Names Board of Canada. While the federal government manages the Canadian Geographical Names Database, decisions to rename most features normally rest with relevant provincial or territorial bodies, often involving local communities, Indigenous groups, and other stakeholders.

Several geographic features in Canada bear the Trump name across the country, primarily in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador. These include lakes, islands, and waterways such as the Trump Islands in Notre Dame Bay off Newfoundland's northeast coast. The islands, North Trump Island and South Trump Island, were once a small mining and fishing community in 1901, though they are now uninhabited and visited for recreational activities.

Other Trump-named bodies of water include Trump Lake, East Trump Lake, West Trump Lake, and Trump Creek in Ontario.

Municipal street names are governed locally and can be changed through city processes. In Ottawa, Trump Avenue is set to change its name following the city's upcoming October election. Councillor Riley Brockington plans to collaborate with residents to select a new name, describing "Trump Avenue" as an embarrassment. Proposed alternatives include "Taco Avenue," drawing a humorous reference to a 2025 internet acronym, "Trump Always Chickens Out."

Most of the Canadian geographic features named after Trump were established long before his political career and in some cases, even before he was born. For instance, the Trump Islands in Newfoundland were known by that name in the 19th century and were recorded in the government database in 1954. The Trump Lake and Trump Creek in Ontario were named in 1973. However, Ottawa's Trump Avenue was given its name about 25 years ago as part of a New York City theme, reflecting Trump's earlier career as a real estate developer.
