Bolgatanga Girls restores boarding status of student allegedly defiled by watchmen

Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School has reinstated the boarding status of a student accused of being sexually assaulted by two watchmen at the institution. The decision was communicated to the student's parent via a letter dated August 20, 2026, from the school's Headmistress. This move followed instructions from the Ghana Education Service (GES) to revert the student's day status to boarding arrangement.

The situation emerged after the Ministry of Education intervened, directing that the student's boarding status be restored immediately. The Ministry emphasized that the 14-year-old student could not be held responsible for the alleged abuse and directed the GES to investigate the incident, ensuring she received appropriate medical care and psychological support.

The case drew public attention due to allegations that the student was sexually abused by two school watchmen. The alleged incident also raised questions about the school's handling of the student's welfare following the change in her boarding status. The Ministry of Education condemned the alleged abuse, stressing the responsibility schools have to safeguard the safety, dignity, and rights of students, especially vulnerable children.

The GES has initiated steps regarding the matter, and the comprehensive investigation is ongoing.
