Assam Man Missing In Nepal Flash Floods As Death Count Rises To 547

Catastrophic floods have struck the Nepal-China border, leaving hundreds dead and thousands missing. Rescue teams are racing to find survivors after a torrent of water and mud, several stories high, swept through communities following a glacier collapse. The Nepalese army is using helicopters to rescue people due to numerous roads and bridges being washed out.

Humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to aid the survivors. Direct Relief, a nonprofit that provides medicines and healthcare to disaster-struck areas, has pre-positioned emergency supplies in Nepal ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. They have already prepared additional shipments to send to Nepal, with new donations allowing the organization to provide more support in the coming months.

Experts warn that Nepal is highly vulnerable to disasters, ranking among the highest on disaster vulnerability indexes. The country has faced earthquakes, floods, droughts, and wildfires in the past.

U.S.-based organizations are on the ground in Nepal, providing immediate relief. All Hands & Hearts, Catholic Relief Services, Global Giving, Humanity & Inclusion, Save the Children, and World Central Kitchen are among the organizations already active in the region. They are providing various aid, including emergency relief, rebuilding schools and homes, distributing emergency supplies, delivering cooking kits, mosquito nets, and blankets, and feeding the affected population.

Cash donations are currently the most needed to enable local agencies and nonprofits to continue their relief efforts efficiently.
