As Winter fuels Netanyahu’s discontent, Israel's Right faces a new dilemma

In the aftermath of October 7, there was a strong desire across Israel for a complete overhaul of leadership in all sectors – politics, military, and intelligence. This sentiment included not only those in government but also those who contributed to the divisive climate that made Israel vulnerable to external threats. The phrase "Sweep the bums out" encapsulated this sentiment.

However, two months before elections, the situation has changed. The anticipated clean sweep has not materialized, as the same prominent figures remain at the helm of their parties. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Gadi Eisenkot, Avigdor Liberman, Naftali Bennett, and Yair Lapid are all still in key positions, despite their involvement in the policies leading to October 7.

While there are new faces within the parties, they are generally lower on the lists. Ofer Winter's People of Israel (POI) party stands out as a notable exception. Winter's slate includes individuals with significant experience in countering anti-Israel propaganda, loss of loved ones, and reporting during the conflict. However, his party has faced criticism for a lack of political and diplomatic experience.

Despite this, Winter believes that their inexperience is actually an asset, as they were not involved in creating the current situation and can offer a fresh perspective to clean it up. The first polls indicate that Winter's party is gaining attention, though its prospects remain uncertain. If Winter fails to reach the electoral threshold, it could result in wasted votes for Netanyahu's right-wing bloc.

However, if he does cross the threshold, he could potentially gain enough support to challenge the current establishment, possibly forcing Netanyahu out of the premiership.
