Arsenal only likely exit for Alvarez as striker skips training

Julian Alvarez, the Argentina international striker, has been absent from Atletico Madrid training since being informed privately that the club has no intention of selling him to Barcelona. According to sources, Atletico communicated directly to Alvarez and his advisers earlier this week, stating they will not engage in negotiations with Barcelona regarding the transfer.

The 26-year-old has missed two consecutive days of training, citing illness as the reason. Atletico has also issued two public statements in 24 hours, reaffirming their refusal to grant Alvarez's wish to join Barcelona. Despite this, the club is open to selling him to Arsenal and has held talks with the Premier League champions.

Atleti director Mateu Alemany visited London last week, meeting with Arsenal officials and stating his side would demand a fee of 150m euros (£128m). Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, is eager to sign Alvarez before the month ends, but his strong desire to join Barcelona has stalled Arsenal's pursuit. However, discussions between Atletico and Arsenal over a club-to-club agreement for Alvarez have reportedly been positive.

If Alvarez agrees to Arsenal's terms, a deal should be finalized swiftly. Atletico reiterated their stance on Wednesday, stating there is "0% chance" of selling him to Barcelona. On Thursday, the club's board unanimously backed this decision.
