Abi Bennington thriving at middle for Riverheads volleyball: Roundup

Abi Bennington is a talented athlete excelling in multiple sports for Riverheads. While widely known for her basketball prowess, the 5-foot-6 1/2 junior has recently turned her focus to volleyball. Standing slightly shorter than the average middle blocker, Bennington compensates with her impressive vertical leap, which she claims can reach her elbow over the net.

She relishes the position, stating that she "is part of every play, every time" and that the team leans on her for blocking and defensive duties. Her basketball background has transferred well to volleyball, aiding her in spatial awareness and anticipating opponent movements. Bennington's skills also transfer to soccer, where she serves as the goalkeeper, requiring her to be vigilant of the entire field.

The junior, who plays four sports, is driven by high standards, aiming for excellence in all her endeavors. In Riverheads' season opener on August 27, Bennington displayed her prowess, contributing four kills, two blocks, four digs, and an ace as the Gladiators defeated Stonewall Jackson 25-11, 25-21, 25-15. Assistant coach Dayton Moore lauded the team's energy, emphasizing their control over it.

Stuarts Draft secured a victory over Broadway on the same day, with Addy Coyner leading in kills and assists. Meanwhile, Wilson Memorial suffered a loss to TA Turner Ashby, falling 1-1 in their season.
