2027: IPCR, UN, UK Mobilise Nigerian Youths Against Political Violence, Hate Speech

As Nigeria's 2027 general elections loom, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), the United Nations and the British High Commission have called upon Nigeria's young people to become a frontline force against political violence, hate speech, misinformation and conflict triggers. At a youth peacebuilding training programme in Abuja, the three institutions highlighted the importance of young Nigerians transitioning from passive observers to active agents of prevention.

The IPCR's Director-General, Dr Joseph Ochogwu, emphasized that peacebuilding is a collective responsibility, not solely the government's task. He urged participants to reject violence, listen before judging and treat their social-media activity as a civic responsibility. Ochogwu warned that young Nigerians must be cautious of misinformation and hate speech on social media, as they could exacerbate existing tensions.

The UN Peace and Development Adviser, Ms Grace Kpohazounde, emphasized the need for vigilance during the upcoming election period, urging young people to speak up against injustice and exclusion. She stressed that young Nigerians could wield significant influence in preventing conflict, particularly through their digital platforms.

Dr David Rinnert, the British High Commission's Senior Conflict Adviser, focused on the importance of leadership in effective peacebuilding, urging leaders not to rush into solutions without fully understanding the underlying issues.
