100m hurdles: Masai Russell, who broke Tobi Amusan’s world record with her in Zurich race

American hurdler Masai Russell shattered the women's 100m hurdles world record, previously held by Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, at the recent Zurich Diamond League race. Russell clocked a time of 12.09 seconds, just 0.03 seconds quicker than Amusan's old record of 12.12 seconds. The Olympic champion from the United States completed the race with a flawless run, edging out Amusan in second place with a time of 12.23 seconds.

Nadine Visser of the Netherlands secured third place, finishing in 12.34 seconds. Russell, born on June 17, 2000, is a 26-year-old American athlete from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, who specializes in the 100m hurdles. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the world in the women's 100m hurdles by World Athletics. Russell's breakthrough came at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she won gold in the women's 100m hurdles.

Prior to her record-breaking run, Russell had established herself as one of the leading hurdlers in the world, having won gold at the 2024 Olympic Games. She attends the University of Kentucky, where she has won 11 All-American honors and achieved a collegiate 100m hurdles record of 12.36 seconds.
