Zimbabwean truck driver held over R3.8m tobacco smuggling bust

A 45-year-old Zimbabwean man, Shumba Munetsi, has been detained for allegedly smuggling tobacco worth around R3.8 million through the Groblersbrug Port of Entry in South Africa. Munetsi, who made his first court appearance on Wednesday, August 26, was apprehended by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Policing team on Monday, August 24, at the Groblersbrug Port of Entry.

The team intercepted a Volvo truck towing an LP gas trailer attempting to enter South Africa. During an inspection, the driver claimed the trailer was carrying gas, but officers became suspicious when they discovered a large concealed hatch beneath the trailer. After questioning, Munetsi admitted that the trailer was concealing tobacco products.

The hidden compartment contained 521 plastic bags, amounting to approximately 7,294 kilograms of suspected manufactured tobacco, with an estimated value of R3.8 million. The seized Volvo truck and LP gas trailer have a combined estimated value of R1.8 million. The investigation is ongoing to uncover the origin and destination of the illicit tobacco and to determine if others are involved in the smuggling operation.

Limpopo provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, praised the border policing team's vigilance and commitment to detecting the concealed tobacco and protecting the country's economy from organized criminal activities.
