Wireman escapes mandatory life term after court acquits him over cannabis cultivation charge

IPOH, Aug 27 — A 37-year-old wireman, Aszizi Ayub, has avoided a mandatory life sentence after being acquitted of charges related to cannabis cultivation at his residence. The Sessions Court in Ipoh dismissed the case against Aszizi today, finding the prosecution could not establish a strong case. The alleged offense involved allowing a cannabis plant weighing 253.4 grams to be grown in a black plastic bag at his home on July 31, 2023.

Punishable by life imprisonment and six or more strokes of the cane, the offense falls under Section 6B(1)© of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi stated that the court reviewed the prosecution's evidence and the defense's arguments before acquitting the accused. Aszizi's legal team, consisting of Keshvinder Singh, Sukhdave Singh, and Renver Singh, successfully argued the case, leading to his acquittal and discharge.
