Zanetor demands strict enforcement of Styrofoam takeaway ban

Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has urged for the strict enforcement of the ban on Styrofoam takeaway packs, emphasizing that January 1, 2027, should be adhered to. The environmental hazards caused by the excessive use and improper disposal of polystyrene products, widely known as Styrofoam, are no longer acceptable, she argued.

The ban should cover all aspects of Styrofoam, including production, import, distribution, sale, and usage. Dr Zanetor advocated for both public education and penalties for non-compliance with the ban. She believes that the risks associated with polystyrene cannot be downplayed and must be addressed. While changing public behavior may take time, the government can encourage compliance through incentives and sanctions.

The Korle Klottey MP also mentioned that in the past, people typically carried their own containers when purchasing food, suggesting that Ghana could adopt more sustainable practices. She urged the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continue its public education campaign leading up to the ban, citing a recent awareness initiative in Kumasi.

Dr Zanetor stressed that the policy's success will ultimately depend on how strictly authorities enforce it. The call aligns with the EPA's efforts nationwide to raise awareness about the dangers of Styrofoam and to implement the President's directive to ban its use.
