Zanetor backs January 2027 deadline for Styrofoam ban

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the prospective Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, has backed the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) planned ban on polystyrene foam products, insisting that the January 1, 2027 deadline remain unaltered. The ban will encompass the manufacture, import, sale, and usage of Styrofoam items, such as popular takeout food containers.

Dr. Zanetor emphasized the gravity of the environmental impact of persistent reliance on polystyrene products, deeming it imperative to take decisive governmental action. She conveyed these sentiments during her appearance before Parliament's Appointments Committee on August 27, 2026. Dr. Zanetor argued that phasing out Styrofoam was a vital component of addressing Ghana's deteriorating waste management issues and promoting more sustainable practices.

She highlighted the EPA's ongoing efforts to raise public awareness, citing a recent campaign in Kumasi. Dr. Zanetor underscored the significance of public education in facilitating the transition to alternatives, but stressed that it would not suffice without rigorous enforcement. She recalled how people used to bring their own containers for food purchases, suggesting that shifts in consumer behavior had led to the prevalent use of disposable packaging.

Dr. Zanetor recognized that altering entrenched habits might take time but proposed that government could expedite the process through incentives, penalties, and unwavering enforcement. She reaffirmed her stance on the January 1, 2027 deadline, stating, "I stand by the fact that the ban timeline has to be maintained." She urged authorities to demonstrate a strong commitment to enforcing the ban once it becomes effective, asserting that decisive implementation would be crucial in mitigating the environmental consequences of polystyrene waste.
