Yayoi Kusama, Pop Artist Who Expanded and Endured, Dies at 97

Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist who gained worldwide fame for her vibrant paintings, sculptures, and immersive installations, has passed away at the age of 97. Kusama spent her entire life dedicated to artistic creation, achieving significant acclaim as an avant-garde artist who explored visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry.

Her enduring themes and distinctive psychedelic color schemes, often seen in her mirrored installations, helped her acquire a massive global audience through social media. Kusama's journey began in an unhappy childhood marked by abuse, but she found solace in drawing flowers, which later evolved into her obsession with the infinite and self-obliteration.

After moving to New York in 1958, she made a breakthrough with her "infinity net" paintings and sold her first piece to Frank Stella and Donald Judd for $75. Kusama's career faced challenges, as she was often unrecognized by the art world, with allegations of her ideas being appropriated by white male artists. Her work explored the concept of self-obliteration, inspired by her hallucinations, which she expressed through her infamous Narcissus Garden installation at the 1966 Venice Biennale.

Her controversial performances and political statements, such as staging New York's first "homosexual wedding" and protesting the invasion of Czechoslovakia, hinted at her progressive vision. Kusama's life took a turn for the better when she checked herself into a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo in 1977, where she found stability and continued to create art until her final days.
