Why I am playing for free at boyhood club – Herrera

Former Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has returned to his boyhood club Real Zaragoza on a free transfer, marking one of the most significant dreams of his career. At 37 years old, Herrera has enjoyed a successful playing career, playing for clubs such as Athletic Club, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Boca Juniors.

However, his heart once again belongs to Zaragoza, the club where he began his professional journey and where he grew up. After spending 15 years away from the Spanish side, the midfielder has joined Real Zaragoza on a free transfer from Boca Juniors.

Zaragoza, who were relegated from La Liga in 2013, are currently struggling in Spain’s third tier. The club's decline has been painful for Herrera, but he wants to focus on helping them rebuild their fortunes. Herrera has decided to donate his salary to the Real Zaragoza Foundation, rather than take a wage from the club. His decision is driven by his deep connection with the club and his desire to give something back to the team that helped shape his career.

"I don't need a contract. I have a very successful career. I have taken care of my money," Herrera said. "I can give this present to myself. To put that shirt on… for free because I wanted to help my club, my team, my city."

Herrera's decision reflects his desire to help Zaragoza return to their former glory and regain their place in Spanish football. He hopes his experience and passion will contribute to the club's resurgence, focusing on the future and building a brighter tomorrow.
