‘We’ll no longer tolerate deliberate killing of our cows by local militias’ – Plateau MACBAN

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Plateau State chapter, has issued a stern warning to local militias known as the Berom and Mangu Militias. The warning comes after a series of attacks on cows belonging to MACBAN members across Plateau State. These attacks have resulted in the loss of over 2,000 cows and more than 100 herdsmen since the beginning of the year, primarily in Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Jos East, Bassa, and Mangu local government areas.

MACBAN Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, clarified that while some believe Fulani bandits are responsible for these attacks, investigations have shown that they are mostly carried out by local militia gangs. One notable incident cited by Babayo is the ambush of herder Alhaji Jeji Abdullahi in Bangai Village, Riyom, on August 26, 2026, where 21 of his cows were killed by Berom militants from Torok Village.

Babayo expressed deep concern over the repeated destruction of livelihoods for innocent pastoralists, stating that such attacks not only constitute criminal acts but also pose a threat to peace, economic stability, and the rule of law. He stressed that MACBAN will no longer tolerate these attacks and will seek justice, both within and outside Nigeria. The group urged all relevant security agencies to investigate the attacks, identify the perpetrators, and ensure they are prosecuted.

MACBAN also called for increased security measures around vulnerable pastoral communities and grazing areas to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property. While condemning the attacks, MACBAN appealed to the Fulani community to remain peaceful and law-abiding, cooperating fully with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. The statement emphasized that the continuous destruction of the lives and property of innocent pastoralists must cease.
