US weighs a new round of tariffs on semiconductors, Politico reports

On August 27, Politico reported that the Trump administration is contemplating a new round of tariffs on semiconductors and other tech goods. According to eight individuals familiar with the discussions, the proposed tariffs could extend beyond microchips to encompass products utilizing them, including laptops, gaming consoles, and data center servers.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick advocates for a system where foreign entities' relief from tariffs depends on their investments in U.S. chip manufacturing to stimulate domestic production. Washington is also considering a phased-in approach for the tariffs, with the framework potentially undergoing significant revisions in the coming weeks or months, as per Politico.

However, Reuters has been unable to confirm the report, and both the White House and the U.S. Commerce Department have not provided immediate statements on the matter. Earlier, U.S. Trade Representative Jamie Pressly Greer had indicated that no new U.S. tariffs on semiconductors were anticipated, but emphasized the importance of implementing duties to encourage the return of chip production to the U.S.
