UK to restrict convicts’ freedom after leaving prison

The United Kingdom is implementing a groundbreaking crackdown to limit the freedom of serious sexual and violent offenders upon their release from prison. In England and Wales, new "restriction zones" will be established, enabling probation services to confine dangerous criminals to a limited radius. The government asserts that this measure has been influenced by the experiences and advocacy of victims, whose input will shape the creation of individual zones.

The scheme, unveiled on Wednesday, represents a more stringent approach to "exclusion zones," which previously prohibited offenders from specific locations such as victims' homes or workplaces.

Individuals who violate these new regulations, which will commence in October, and are under GPS monitoring as former convicts, risk being rearrested. Secretary of State for Justice Alex Norris emphasized that perpetrators of grave crimes will be confined to meticulously controlled areas, as no victim should ever fear the presence of an abuser once again.

"Those who step outside the boundaries can be swiftly identified through GPS and face being sent back to prison," Norris stated. "Offenders should bear the consequences of their crimes, not their victims."

Norris vowed to maintain the imprisonment of the most dangerous offenders while blocking changes to the release dates of convicts convicted of murder, rape, severe child sexual abuse, and grooming offenses. The government is also focusing on accelerating the deportation of foreign criminals, optimizing the utilization of the women's prison estate, and conducting a review of the "unjust" Imprisonment for Public Protection sentences.

Since 2024, the UK has expanded electronic monitoring and added 3,600 new probation officers, ensuring lawbreakers face closer observation and greater protection for victims. The UK is tightening the restrictions on convicts' freedom after their release from prison.
