UK households can now plug solar panels into standard sockets

From today, households in England, Scotland, and Wales can generate their own solar power using a simple plug-in system, announced by the UK government on 27 August 2026. These portable solar panels, rated up to 800 watts, can be directly connected to a standard three-pin wall socket without requiring an electrician. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero estimates that these devices can supply up to 20 percent of an average home's electricity needs, potentially saving households up to £110 annually.

The change follows a 4 percent increase in the domestic energy price cap by Ofgem, driven by higher fuel costs due to geopolitical tensions. Major retailers like Amazon, Currys, Argos, and Wickes plan to sell pre-approved kits online and in-store. The technology aims to make clean energy more accessible, particularly for renters, flat owners, and those living in smaller terraced homes.

The system uses micro-inverters to convert the direct current generated by the panels into alternating current compatible with household electricity. Strict safety rules require automatic anti-islanding protection and limit the use of extension leads, multi-way adaptors, or cable reels. The systems can only be installed in fixed wall sockets and cannot be used with extension leads or multi-way adaptors.

Fire safety rules restrict installation on certain surfaces and require written landlord permission for external installations. Homeowners must register their plug-in solar systems on the official UK registration portal to help track small-scale generation connected to the grid.
