UEFA seeks unity candidate to challenge Infantino

The European Football Union (UEFA) is actively pursuing a candidate to oppose FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the upcoming presidential election, despite halting its boycott of FIFA competitions. The 55 European member associations, alongside UEFA representatives on the FIFA Council, are anticipated to receive a letter confirming the FIFA Forward Enterprise plan will not be reinstated.

UEFA representatives expressed optimism that a unity candidate could be found to challenge Infantino, who requires 106 out of FIFA's 211 member associations to win the election. UEFA has now abandoned plans to initiate a motion of no confidence against Infantino, a move requiring 159 votes, or three quarters of FIFA's membership.

While a suitable challenger has not been named yet, Concacaf President Victor Montagliani is seen as a strong potential contender. Nomination for the FIFA presidency must be submitted by November 18. UEFA believes that even if Infantino secures a close victory, his presidency could face significant challenges if his level of support dwindles and his legitimacy is called into question.

Last month, UEFA’s 55 associations voted to boycott FIFA competitions until Infantino's Forward Enterprise proposal was dismantled, along with assurances that FIFA would not allow private ownership in its governance or competitions. FIFA welcomed UEFA's decision to cease the boycott, stating that it is pleased all qualified teams will participate in the upcoming Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, where six European teams will compete, including England, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Poland.
