UAE pledges $10 million in aid to boost Nepal-Tibet flood relief efforts

The United Arab Emirates announced on Thursday a $10 million humanitarian aid package to support relief efforts following devastating floods along the Nepal-Tibet border. The floods, which killed hundreds and left thousands missing, were triggered by a wall of ice, mud, and rock collapsing into a mountain river. President Sheikh Mohamed directed the UAE Aid Agency to deliver the crucial financial assistance.

Over 350 people have been confirmed dead and over 1,000 are still missing in Nepal and neighboring China. Rescue teams are continuing their desperate search for survivors. Authorities in Nepal have deployed helicopters to locate survivors and deliver emergency supplies to those cut off in towns and valleys. The UAE Aid Agency's chairman, Dr Tareq Al Amiri, emphasized the country's leading role in providing urgent humanitarian responses to disasters and crises worldwide.

Teams from the UAE Aid Agency are working with local authorities and international organizations to ensure support reaches affected groups. At a hospital in Maharajgunj, families recount the harrowing ordeal, with some, like Girilal Budhathoki and his brother Newall, still grappling with the loss of loved ones. Newall expressed his despair, stating, "Nobody knew it was coming."
