Trump administration illegally retaliated against Anthropic, judge rules

A US federal judge has declared unlawful the Department of Defense's designation of AI startup Anthropic as a supply chain risk, labeling the decision "illegal and baseless". Anthropic challenged the military's refusal to use its AI models for surveillance or autonomous weapons. US District Judge Rita Lin stated that citing national security does not grant carte blanche to penalize government critics.

The ruling highlights the first instance of a U.S. company being publicly labeled as a supply-chain risk due to national security concerns. The designation stemmed from a law intended to shield military systems from foreign sabotage. Anthropic contended its AI models were unsuitable for military applications due to reliability issues and opposition to domestic surveillance, viewing it as an infringement on individual rights.

The Pentagon argued private entities should not dictate military operations while the White House branded Anthropic a "radical left, woke company" intent on controlling military affairs, asserting the military was obligated to U.S. Constitution rather than any company's policies. The legal dispute could potentially incur billions in financial losses and reputational damage for Anthropic.
