The SDF's dissolution is a historic moment for Syria

On Tuesday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a prominent Kurdish military entity in Syria, announced its dissolution, integrating its fighters into the Syrian state. This marks a historic moment for Syria, a country emerging from decades of civil war, international isolation, and misrule. The SDF, established in 2015 with American backing, had become one of the most powerful forces in the north and east of Syria.

Its dissolution signifies a significant step towards building state institutions and strengthening the Syrian state, something Kurds have long aspired for.

Mazloum Abdi, one of Syria's most prominent Kurdish leaders, led the decision to dissolve the SDF. His move acknowledges the long-standing discrimination faced by Kurds, including the denial of citizenship and restrictions on their language. The Kurdish experience in Syria has been one of profound mistrust and unequal relationship with the government in Damascus. However, the Kurdish leadership has now chosen to subordinate its power to a larger goal of rebuilding a unified Syrian state under one flag.

The Syrian government's efforts to address Kurdish concerns about majoritarian rule, such as recognizing Kurdish as a national language and granting Syrian nationality to previously stateless Kurds, are crucial. However, obstacles remain, including disagreements over the future of women's units among the Kurdish fighters and their integration into the national armed forces. These issues should not overshadow the significant progress made.

If the Kurdish experience progresses as desired, it could serve as a test of Syria's transformation, helping pave the way for continued stabilisation of the country. Abdi's decision represents a historic choice for a united and pluralistic Syria. All those in power now must fulfill the promise of a Syria that belongs to all its people.
