Tanzania ruling CCM expels VP Nchimbi, Energy Minister to take his place

Nairobi, Kenya — Tanzania's ruling CCM party has expelled Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi from the party due to a breach of its values, less than a month after he announced his resignation. CCM Secretary-General Dr Asha-Rose Migiro made the announcement after a meeting of the National Executive Committee, chaired by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Energy Minister Deogratius John Ndejembi has been appointed to replace Nchimbi as Vice President, with Nchimbi's resignation set to become effective on September 4. Ndejembi, representing Chamwino constituency in Parliament, will need the support of a majority of Members of Parliament to formally assume the role upon nomination.

The political shift occurred shortly after Nchimbi had called for Tanzanians to push for a new constitution, emphasizing the need for a consensus-based document to address various concerns and support long-term development. Nchimbi resigned following a conversation with President Suluhu, who expressed a desire for a change in leadership.

The announcement came amid mounting pressure on Nchimbi, with local media reports prompting the suspension of a media outlet. Ndejembi's elevation to the Vice Presidency adds a new element to Tanzania's ongoing constitutional reform debate, which was initiated in 2011 and stalled in 2014. President Suluhu has indicated that the process would be revived before 2030, and CCM committed in its 2025 election manifesto to continue constitutional reforms.
