Sundowns thrash AmaZulu 5-2 to move level with leaders Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns put on an emphatic display, defeating AmaZulu 5-2 at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night. This victory moved Sundowns to second place in the Betway Premiership, tying them with leaders Orlando Pirates with 10 points each after four games. Sundowns' unbeaten start to the league season continued, extending to 32 matches without a defeat at home.

The Blue Eagles took the lead early with a goal from Brayan Leon, who volleyed the ball into the top corner after a deflection off Cassius Mailula. Teboho Mokoena, returning from injury, added a second goal with a free-kick from outside the box. AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane made several changes during the match, reducing the deficit early in the second half through Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya.

Ngwenya would later add another goal, bringing his total for the season to seven. However, Sundowns quickly regained their two-goal lead when Tashreeq Matthews finished calmly past the goalkeeper. Leon then extended the lead to four goals by the end of the first half. Despite Ngwenya's late goal, Bennet Mokoena secured the win with a final-stage goal.

While Sundowns' attacking performance and Mokoena's return were praised, concerns remain about their defensive vulnerabilities. They will need to address these issues as they face Golden Arrows in the MTN8 semi-final second leg on Sunday.
