Sudan war risks spreading after army strike inside Chad, US envoy warns

U.S. envoy Massad Boulos expressed deep concern on Thursday that the war in Sudan risks spreading across borders after a reported Sudanese army air strike inside Chad. Boulos, who is President Donald Trump's adviser for Arab and African affairs, raised the issue during a call with Chad's President Mahamat Idriss Deby. The U.S. official emphasized the need to halt external military and financial support to the opposing forces in Sudan.

Chad accused Sudan's army of conducting air and drone strikes against a convoy inside Chadian territory last week. The strikes allegedly targeted a convoy that had crossed over 100km into Chad's Ennedi-Est region from Sudan. Chad's military authorities claimed the strikes violated its sovereignty and placed its forces on high alert, reserving the right to defend its territorial integrity.

The U.S. envoy highlighted Chad's humanitarian role in facilitating aid to Darfur and supporting Sudanese refugees fleeing the conflict. The African Union also expressed concern over the air strikes, calling on all parties to exercise utmost restraint and prevent the conflict from spreading beyond Sudan's borders.
