OpenTIE and OpenXWA are modern, open-source ports of the classic Star Wars flight simulators TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance. These projects bring the nostalgic experiences of the iconic games to contemporary platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux.

OpenTIE faithfully recreates the original 1995 Collector's Edition and the 1998 Windows release of TIE Fighter. It supports both editions simultaneously, combining 1995 menus, cutscenes, and the adaptive iMUSE soundtrack with the enhanced 1998 flight simulation and 3D assets. OpenTIE offers users the flexibility to choose between menus and cutscenes, flight simulation, and music independently, preserving the unique presentation of each edition.

It also supports modern graphics modes, with classic and modern visuals, and a responsive flight simulation capable of updating up to 240 Hz to match high-refresh-rate displays.

The adaptive iMUSE soundtrack from the 1995 Collector's Edition is accurately emulated, responding dynamically to mission events and seamlessly transitioning between themes. Users can choose between Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas, OPL3 emulation, or FluidSynth with a user-selected SoundFont to play the music through their preferred audio device. The original prerecorded TIE98 music is also available when users prefer the complete 1998 experience.

OpenTIE supports modern gamepads and joysticks, allowing users to configure their preferred control devices through the settings. OpenTIE validates the selected installations, remembers them for future launches, and imports compatible pilot files during initial setup. It remains under active development, with ongoing bug fixes and improvements.
