Shared national loyalty was key to Tan Cheng Lock’s Malayan vision, says Wee

MCA president Wee Ka Siong revealed that Tan Cheng Lock's vision for Malaya emphasized the importance of shared national loyalty, as reported on today's launch of Tan's biography, "One Country, One People: The Life and Legacy of Tun Tan Cheng Lock," held at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TARUMT). Wee explained that while Tan appreciated cultural identity and traditions, he also recognized the necessity of a shared sense of belonging and loyalty to the country among Malaysians, transcending racial and religious divisions.

During the pre-independence era, the Chinese population in Malaya was expanding, with no alternative destinations and a desire to remain loyal to the country. This was evident in Tan's efforts to build bridges between various ideological groups, including conservatives and leftists, ultimately uniting the Chinese community. Tan's granddaughter, Tan Siok Choo, underscored the significance of his leadership despite his limited proficiency in the Peranakan Malay and English languages, highlighting the community's respect for his "essentially Chinese" values.

Siok Choo, co-editor of the biography with academic Heng Pek Koon, explained that the project, initiated in 2018, aimed to resolve an academic debate regarding MCA's founding. She confirmed that Tan was the primary founder of the party, through meticulous verification by co-author Chin Chong Foh. The biography delves into Tan's personal relationships, spanning linguistic and political divides, such as his close friendship with Penang entrepreneur Yap Chor Ee. Proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the Tun Tan Siew Sin Student Loan Fund at TARUMT.
