Rs 250 crore elevated viaduct error at Mumbai Metro 7A may face demolition

A costly error on Mumbai's Metro Line 7A could lead to the demolition and reconstruction of an elevated viaduct in Vile Parle East, authorities have warned. The 1 km stretch, which has already seen most of its civil construction completed, is facing a height discrepancy of 2.5 meters with overhead electric wires, exceeding clearance permitted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) in the airport funnel zone.

If unresolved, this could cause a Rs 250 crore redo, further delaying the 3.4 km Metro Line 7A that was originally set to open in 2021. The issue of the elevated equipment height, required for metro operations, was not factored into the design despite AAI's no-objection certificate in 2022. The delay in Line 7A's opening, scheduled for the financial year 2026-27, raises concerns about the project's timeline.
