Rakul Preet Singh reveals unseen facets of Surpanakha that drew her to ‘Ramayana’ role

Mumbai, August 27 - Actor Rakul Preet Singh, who is set to star in the upcoming epic film 'Ramayana', has shared her thoughts on the character of Surpanakha. The actress, who plays Surpanakha, the sister of Ravana, has revealed that her interest in the role stemmed from her desire to delve into the lesser-known aspects of the character.

Explaining her decision to take on the role, Rakul said, "Every few years, you see a different interpretation and presentation of these characters, while keeping the essence rooted in the original text. As an actor, you only look at a character from that lens, that it's a character that has layers, that has the possibility and ability to shine through the film."

Surpanakha, according to Rakul, was once the most beautiful woman in Lanka, but she also had an ego. However, she emphasized that the character was complex and had multiple layers. She added, "As an actor, it's fun to explore those layers."

The film also features Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Ravie Dubey, Yash, and Sunny Deol. Rakul further shared that the role offered her the opportunity to discover new facets of Surpanakha's life that she had not previously encountered. She mentioned, "There was a lot about her that I didn't know. When I read the script, there was a lot about her life before and after that incident where her nose is chopped off by Lakshman."

Rakul concluded that the film's narrative about Surpanakha's life and her interactions with Ram was something she hadn't known before. She expressed her excitement about the film, stating, "What happens in Surpanakha's life and how she meets and stumbles upon Ram - there's a lot which I didn't know, which for me was new when I read the script, and which is why I liked it."

'Ramayana: Part 1' is scheduled to release in theaters on November 6, 2026.
